In 1906 during the Japanese colonization period the “Palangoe
Office” was established in our township.
The name was changed to “Dawu Village
Office” due to the new organizational
system implemented on Sep. 01, 1920. The
office governed the area from Taimali in
the north to Souka in the south and
bounded with Pingtong. The Dawu Village
Office was split into Taimali Village
and Dawu village on Nov. 01, 1937. The
north of Tachukao Creek (present Big
Creek) was Taimali Village and the south
along the South Link Highway to Souka
was Dawu Village. After the restoration
of Taiwan, this region was taken over by
Taitung County Take-over Committee in
December, 1945 and the political
division was once changed to Dawu
Township that exercised jurisdiction
over present Daren Township. On Apr. 01,
1946, the Mountainous Township was
established. The flats near both sides
of the highway were demarcated as Dawu
Township and the mountain area as Daren
(Mountainous) Township with their
respective township offices. The address
of our township office was initially
established in Dawu village and moved to
present address in Shangwu village on
Oct. 01, 1954 for the development of
Dawu fishing port.
